Chairperson

Image of DSAC Chairperson

Name: Michelle Pilkington

Year(s) Elected: 2008-2009; 2009-2010; 2010-2011

What do I do? My job is to ensure that the club, that is, it' members have a voice and a say in the running of their club. I ensure that members are heard and their ideas considered and pursued as appropriate. I try and keep members informed regarding important issues and, supported by a fantastic committee and sub-committee ensure that the day to day operations run as smoothly as is possible.
A big part of my role is to identify problems that will impact on either members or our assets early on and, ensure that they are addressed as quickly as is possible. Equally, I am responsible for pursuing opportunities for the club and taking action to achieve them.

Background: I began diving in the 90's with PADI and learned to dive in Eilat - what a place to learn eh? After my third diving holiday I determined that I wanted to dive more often that just on holiday once a year so sought out a local club.
Why DSAC . . . It was Deb Harpley that put me onto the then Chairman Barry Perton who won me, Debs and a friend of mine over and the three of us joined DSAC in 2000. If I was going to dive in the UK it was always gonne be with a BSAC Club and what a club! The diving is great . . . from trips that are deep technical diving, regular and established wreck diving tto shallower scenic diving. There is something for everyone and the diving takes place all year round!
Plus what a bunch . . . members always make sure Club Nights are such fun and any social events (of which there are lots!) a resounding success. . . The friendliness of members is unparalleled and the diving and socialising always so very memorable. DSAC members are some of the finest people I know!
Back in 2000, I was subsequently 'crossed over' from PADI to BSAC and began my UK diving career as a Sports Diver and, with the help, patience and expertise of DSAC club instructors, I became a Dive Leader (admittedly it took me some time [2006] but I was in New Zealand for a couple of years!).
I very quickly developed a passion for underwater photography and I am now a confident UK diver with hundreds of diving experiences under my belt (which gets smaller every year!), chasing that elusive competition winning underwater photograph . . . you know the one . . . the one in a million picture where you 'just happened to be in the right place at the right time with the right lens on your camera' . . . and am still very much chasing that one!

Diving Officer

Image of DSAC Diving Officer

Name: Lindsey Doyle

Year(s) Elected: 2003/4/5 and then 2008/9/11

What do I do? I aim to ensure every diving related activity within the club is done in a safe manner, Aim to create a safe diving ethos in the club by recommending Safe Diving practices, providing paperwork to help plan dives e.g. risk assessments, overseeing training and try to encourage a wide range of diving available to all according to their qualification. Ensuring that qualified divers new to DSAC, whether trained by another BSAC branch or another agency quickly access all the facilities they want from the club.

Background: I learned to dive with a BSAC school in Menorca in 1992 when the first qualification was called 'Novice' and joined DSAC the following year to train as a Sports Diver (which took nearly 5 years to achieve - must be a record!) However I persevered and then joined the committee and trained as an Instructor to give something back to the club as people had supported me when I needed it! What keeps me interested in diving is that there's always something new to learn, so I have kept myself busy recently by getting a twinset and learning Extended Range Diving then achieving my Advanced Instructor which I am very proud of. I like to think I know all the members and their diving style which helps me in the role of DO. I teach science to teenagers for a living and find teaching people a hobby different but also very rewarding.
