Capability

The Club's boat is a 5.8m Humber Destroyer rigid hull inflatable boat (RIB). We bought it new in 1995 with help from the Foundation for Sport and the ArtsDacorum Borough Council helped us with land and a grant for a boat shed.

The main purpose of the boat is to provide safety cover and a rescue platform for diving offshore. In 2006 we replaced the original twin 55hp Yamaha engines with a Mercury Optimax 135hp engine. It is equipped with a GPS navigation system, an echo sounder, a VHF radio and an oxygen first aid kit.

The boat also transports the divers to the dive site. It is capable of carrying a six divers, sixty miles at twenty five knots in ideal weather conditions.

Using the boat

The club encourages members to make use of the boat by:

  • diving from it

See some photos of RIB diving trips.

  • driving it

The club arranges boat handling and VHF radio courses and trips that allow members to get the required qualifications and experience to drive the boat.

There is more detailed information about using the RIB and its equipment.

  • hiring it

The boat can be hired by suitably qualified and experienced club members, enabling them to organise their own boat trips.

There is more detailed information about hiring the RIB.

We run navigation and dive marshalling courses that provide dive trip organisers with the skills they need to hire the boat.
