Getting qualified

We expect students to be committed and reliable: the Ocean Diver course requires students to attend around ten consecutive Thursday evenings. If students have special circumstances, such as shift working, the club and individual instructors can work around those.

To obtain each diving qualification, the student must :

  • attend each lecture and practical session
  • pass all the tests
  • get the committee's approval of the award of the qualification

As we train a group of students together, on a fixed timetable, spread over many weeks, this is can be a long process.

Generally, we don't ask trainees to do tests until we think they are ready.

The only pressure on you to complete the course or do the dive comes from you - not from us. Although, to get one thing clear, your instructor is not going to say you meet the grade until you do, in fact, meet the grade.

These qualifications must be earned: simply being present on the night is not enough. Successful students must to be skilled and practiced to get their instructors to pass them. All divers need to gain the confidence of every buddy they dive with so that they get a reputation for competence, reliability and safety.
