Technical Diver Equipment
This page outlines technical diving equipment.
Person equipment
The types of equipment typical of technical diving are:
- Large twinsets or rebreathers for the deep phase of the dive
- Several side slung decompression or bail out cylinders for the ascent
- Mixed gas decompression software and diving computers
Blending equipment
Technical divers need the use of other equipment such as:
- Oxygen analysers
- Gas blending equipment to reduce the wastage costs of oxygen and helium
Nitrox and trimix fills are not available at all dive shops and they are often not available at busy times like weekends.
We plan to install blending equipment on our compressor.
Expenses
- A manifolded twinset, a pair of stage cylinders plus 4 regulators will cost upward of £1500.
- A typical closed circuit rebreather will cost at least £4000.
- A mixed gas diving computer could cost £900.
- All cylinders are tested every two and half years and those used in technical diving often have to be "oxygen clean". This is costs at least £30 per cylinder per year.
- When it comes to filling cylinders, helium and oxygen are 20 and 10 times more expensive than air. It's not unusual for a trimix diver to breath £60 of gas on one dive.
