Two instructors and seven students participated in a fun and very informative First Aid for Divers skill development course at the Hemel Motorcycle Club’s clubhouse at the Nash Mills Recreation Centre on Sunday 29 March 2026.

Students learnt the principles and priorities of first aid, including how to summon help, casualty examination, along with the treatments for shock, bleeding and burns, as well as injuries to muscles, bones and joints, and more besides.

Andy B and Nick G delivered the training, with (clearly very accident prone in this context) Nick serving as a willing casualty needing a whole manner of bandaging and splinting techniques.

We used many items not necessarily found in a first-aid kit but very likely to be found on a UK dive boat. Who knew that a delayed surface marker buoy could be so versatile?

Gary volunteered as a stretcher tester, trusting us all not to drop him. Andy tested his faith in the group and a foil blanket to finish the stretcher demos. Luckily no incident forms were needed after either demo.

Aided by plentiful teas, coffees, snacks and especially Katie’s chocolate cake, it was a very enlightening course.

Thanks to Andy and Nick for instructing, Lindsey for sorting out the venue and thanks to the Motorcycle Club for letting us hire the space. All who attended made this an enjoyable day.
