Trip Report: March’s Club Dive Day at Stoney Cove

Waves Shape

Training at Dacorum Scuba continues throughout the year, so despite the 7-degree water (a balmier 8 degrees on the shelf), members took advantage of this quieter time of year to do some decent dives.

Punctures in the sidewall of a brand new car tyre (ouch!) stopped the seventh diver on the team from joining on the day, so six Dacorum Scuba members set off to Stoney Cove for a variety of skills refreshers, fun dives and training.

One member in particular was getting used to his drysuit, which he’d used on the pool night in the preceding week. This was its first outing into proper open water. Stoney is useful in that it has easily accessible steps so weights can be easily adjusted in shallow water; essential for getting used to new kit and a whole new way of diving dry. A quick run round the aircraft cockpit and the Nautilus submarine and Gary had soon clicked with his new suit and was appreciating the warmth. Bright sunshine mid-dives also helped.

Later on some Surface Marker Buoy training was ticked off to complete another lesson for his Sport Diver qualification.

Other members did some rebreather bailout training, and one pair ventured deep into the quarry to get some depth on their twinsets.

A bit of shopping in Underwater World (for one – in preparation for the Shetland trip later in the year) and then to Nemo’s for a quick dinner before heading home. As always, a useful winter warmup for the diving season ahead and a fun day out was had by all.
